In collaboration with Dr. Tamás Novák, the Tulipán Foundation proudly hosted the Gala Celebration following the Neumann 120 Conference in New York City. This series of events commemorated the life and achievements of John von Neumann, one of the most influential Hungarian-born scientists, whose groundbreaking contributions continue to shape the modern world.
Celebrating Science, Art, and Innovation
The Neumann 120 Conference, held on November 9th at NYU Langone Health and Science Building, brought together leading scientists, academics, and corporate leaders to explore von Neumann’s lasting influence. The event was organized by Dr. Tamás Novák, Science and Technology Diplomat, and hosted by György Buzsáki, Biggs Professor of Neuroscience at New York University.
Marina von Neumann Whitman opened the conference, reflecting on her father’s legacy and how his work continues to shape theoretical and technological developments in today’s world. The conference was enriched by Hungarian cultural programming curated by the Tulipán Foundation, bridging science and art in unique and meaningful ways.
Ildikó Fekete, a celebrated mathematician, egg decorator, and recipient of the Junior Prima and Young Master of Folk Art awards, presented her work at both the conference and the gala. Through her demonstration of traditional egg-decorating techniques, Ildikó highlighted the mathematical connections between geometry and folk art.
Tulipán Gala Celebration at MoMath
The celebrations continued with the Tulipán Foundation’s very first gala on the evening of November 9th, hosted at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath). Inspiration was all around, as the gala proved to be a vibrant celebration of Hungarian science, arts, and culture, featuring a seated dinner and exhibits showcasing the work of many talented Tulipán grantees, including:
- Ildikó Fekete, Egg Decorator
- Tamás Gyenes, Woodworker
- Melinda “Meyke” Molnár-Madarász, Fashion Designer
- Bernadett Pap, Embroiderer
- Gergely Pattantyús, Glass Designer
- Students and Teachers of Nádudvar Folk Handicrafts Vocational High School
The evening’s festivities were further enriched by live music from the Fészer Band and a dance performance by the Csűrdöngölő Folk Ensemble, which added joyful energy to the event. Guests also enjoyed a book presentation by Ananyo Bhattacharya, author of The Man from the Future: The Visionary Life of John von Neumann, offering new perspectives on von Neumann’s groundbreaking contributions, as well as a discussion with John Overdeck, Chair of MoMath and the Institute for Advanced Study, whose insights added depth to the festivities.
A Celebration of Legacy and Future Collaboration
With over 100 attendees at the gala and 250 participants throughout the two-day event, the Neumann 120 Conference and Gala was a fitting tribute to John von Neumann’s legacy. The Tulipán Foundation is honored to have played a role in this unique celebration, showcasing the enduring impact of Hungarian science, culture, and arts.
As the Tulipán Foundation looks ahead, we remain committed to building on these partnerships, fostering innovation, and promoting cross-cultural exchange. This event marks just the beginning of future collaborations as we continue to explore the intersections of science, art, and community.
